Careers Day with Hastings Opportunity Area

Monday 30 September 2019

The Hastings Opportunity Area is working closely with schools, colleges and providers to offer the second exciting careers day open to all year 10 and 11 students on Friday  25th October 10 am -1.30 pm, which is an all Hastings Secondary schools INSET day. By holding the day on an Inset day, students will not miss any vital lessons or learning as they work towards their GCSE exams. We strongly recommend that your child takes advantage of this year’s opportunity, even if they took part last year to gain greater experience of the workplace.

The day aims to offer young people the chance to experience the actual workplace environment or a professional standard studio/workshop space and have meaningful encounters with the employees/employers for the employment sector they have chosen to attend. This will enable them to get a feel for work in that environment and find out about both the different jobs/roles in the sector and the skills, qualities, qualifications and careers routes that the people working in the area have achieved. There will be a ‘next steps’ plenary to help young people with the next steps on their journey in terms of courses to consider, and part time/voluntary work to strengthen future applications.

Students across the secondaries have been consulted about the day and confirmed they would be willing and able to make their own way to and from their chosen venue, which is in itself empowering. They will be the responsibility of their parents when travelling as they would on the way to and from school.

All the activities start promptly at 10am and will finish between 1 and 2pm depending on the programme. It is a ‘non uniform’ day but the dress code may vary, those considering teaching and going to a school will need to be smart and tidy, those doing practical workshops like dance or sport will need sportswear and those doing potentially messier land based or construction activities, for example, will need suitable clothes even where overalls are provided. Transport will be provided for students that need it to any out of town activities and successful applicants will be given full details of pick up points and times nearer the day.

The intention is to provide a light Subway lunch for all students, but they may want to bring drinks etc. and children with food allergies are advised to bring their own food if appropriate.

The range of activities is shown in the booklet and students are advised to apply early as places are limited in order to give the most realistic work place experience possible, and to comply with health and safety regulations.

Every attendee, who completes the day, will receive a certificate of attendance that will go into a draw for some high street vouchers. Individual activities may also have their own prizes. Attendance at the day can also be a valuable addition to CVs and college applications as it reflects the commitment the young people will have shown.

The schools will be promoting the activities in assemblies by giving every young person a booklet with more information. Students should be able to sign up from the 30th September until 18th October and remember places are limited. There may be some additions or changes which we will keep you informed of should they occur.

Please encourage your child to take part in the day and have a close look at a job they may be interested in making their career. Your school/academy careers teacher will be able to tell you more and help you to sign up.

Please complete the consent form and application form with your child and return to the school as soon as possible.

Your child will receive a ticket to confirm their place so only book the place you want and ensure you attend on the day. Students who attempt to book more than one place may lose the chance to attend.

We look forward to seeing your child on the day.
