Prize-winners were recognised at an awards event held at St. Mary in the Castle, Hastings, with prizes presented by the mayor of Hastings Cllr James Bacon and actress Jenny Hanley. This year's poetry competition theme was ‘Boats on Hastings Beach’. Congratulations to Melissa Bromley, who won the 13-17 age group with her beautiful poem ‘The Sea’.

The Sea
The cry of seagulls,
Wheeling turbulently in the wind.
Buffering from place to place
With inquisitive tilts mocked by
The harsh cry of the sea itself.

Furious rushing leaps,
Dragging shingle and stone,
Only to be abated by gleeful cries
Of fisherman hauling in the latest catch
The oil slicks of scales tumbling over the deck.

Splintering paint
Worn away by years of salty backlash
The ghost of 52 RX, dusted with golden sand,
Punctuated by flaky splinters
Of creaking wood.

A blink
And the crush of ice
Reveals silver glistening,
Slick water skimming the produce,
Like a tear from a glassy eye.

Filtered sun falling through the clouds
Delicately onto the sea,
Glimmering dearly,
With a seagull bobbing
Upon the Hastings sea.
