Year 6 Transition
Congratulations on being offered a place at Ark Alexandra Academy, we would like to warmly welcome you to our community. Here is a link to our transition booklet which contains all of the important information about joining Ark Alexandra Academy. Below are some common questions that have been asked by parents and students about the transition process.
How do I accept my child’s place at Ark Alexandra?
You will need to return the admissions form to confirm you are accepting the place at Ark Alexandra. Please post the form to: Admissions c/o Lisa Jenkins, Ark Alexandra Academy, William Parker Campus, Park Avenue, Hastings, TN34 2PG. If you cannot post the form back to us, please contact Ms Jenkins, firstname.lastname@example.org, to confirm you are accepting the placement.
Where do I find a copy of the admissions form?
Admissions forms were posted out to parents before the Easter break. If you did not receive a form, there is a link to a copy of the form above to complete and return via post, or you can contact Ms Jenkins requesting another form be posted to you.
Our details e.g. telephone number, have changed since I completed the admissions form. Who do I contact to update these?
Email the changes to Ms Jenkins, email@example.com. Please remember to include your child’s name.
We haven’t returned the completed admission form yet. Is it too late to send it in?
No it's not too late. Please post it back to the school as soon as possible to accept your child's place.
We have not been allocated a place but I would like my child to attend Ark Alexandra. What should I do?
Please contact school admissions at East Sussex County Council. We are unable to process your request directly.
How will you be communicating with us?
We communicate with parents via call, text, email, and letter, so it is important that we always have the most up to date contact information for parents. We also have a parent app, MCAS, there will be details about signing up for this in September.
Will the transition days scheduled for July take place?
Unfortunately, the transition days in July will not be able to go ahead with all students as planned. As we receive further government guidance about the reopening of schools, we will carefully consider how to safely manage student visits to the Helenswood campus. In case visits are not possible before the summer break, we will be producing a virtual tour so students and parents can familiarise themselves with the campus.
When will we meet the Head of Year 7 and Year 7 tutors?
You will meet the Head of Year 7 and your child’s tutor virtually later this term.
When we will be able to buy school uniform?
We are in regular contact with Super Stitch (our uniform providers) about how the current situation may affect their uniform supplies. This is their latest update:
‘We have all the uniform for Ark Alexandra on order with our suppliers and are very confident that they and we, will be able to supply in time for return to school. We are currently working on re-opening and will be following the Government guidelines in order to keep our staff, the students and the parents safe.’
Can I purchase non-labelled uniform items from any store?
Items that include the school logo can only be purchased from Superstitch. However, the navy knee-length skirt, navy trousers and the white collared shirt can be purchased from any store. Similarly, the navy tracksuit bottoms or shorts can be purchased form any store.
When will my child start at Ark Alexandra in September?
The official first day of term for 2020-21 is the 3rd of September. Currently we are unsure whether we will be able to open to all students on this date. We will share detailed plan for the start of term in September, including student return dates, when we receive further government guidance about schools reopening.
Why am I being asked to choose between French and Spanish?
In Year 7 the vast majority of students at Ark Alexandra study either French or Spanish during language lessons. As part of the timetabling process for this, we are asking parents/carers if they have a preference for which language their child will study. You will have received a text message recently asking you to make a selection. If you do not reply to the message, we will assume you have no preference.
Please note that whilst we will make every effort to ensure all students study their selected language, due to the complexities of timetabling, we cannot guarantee this. For some students where we identify literacy as a significant barrier to their learning, we may timetable intensive literacy support during the language lessons instead. Unfortunately students are not able to study both languages in Year 7.
Will the school bus routes be running in September?
We are in frequent contact with Stagecoach about the bus routes and will update this page when we have further information.
Which buses can my child take to the Helenswood Campus?
Please visit www.stagecoachbus.com to plan your route to school. It is a good idea to practise this before the first day of school in September.
What will happen if my child does not go back to primary school before the summer break due to the coronavirus situation?
This will not impact on your child taking their place at Ark Alexandra. Please continue with the learning tasks set by your child’s primary school. Our subject teams are developing their curricula to take account of current school closures to ensure that all students can be successful in their learning next year.
My child has special educational needs. Will there be any special transition activities?
Yes. Our SEND team is already liaising with the primaries to ensure a smooth transition. A member of our SEND team will be in contact with you directly after the half term break to discuss the needs of your child and successful strategies used at primary. There will also be additional small group transition visits to the Helenswood campus arranged for when schools reopen. We will provide a detailed schedule for these visits in advance so you can prepare your child for the day.
My child received one to one support at primary. Will this continue?
We have an excellent SEND team who will spend the first term getting to know your child and how to help them be successful at Ark Alexandra. A plan will then be drawn up which may include a variety of support measures including in class support, small group sessions, one to one sessions, and/or specialist support.
Do you have a nurture room?
The SEND team is based in a special area of the building with flexible rooming to allow for the variety of support session they run. Students will be invited to attend this area when they have a session scheduled. This space is not a drop in area, so we have the following to support students who are anxious about the school day:
- Nurture breakfast in the canteen before school with SEND staff (breakfast is free to all students)
- HERO time (here everyday, ready on time) during tutor time to ensure students are dressed, equipped and prepared for learning each day
- A break and lunch club
