Autumn 2025 CKB

Why Homework Matters

At our school, we believe that well-designed homework plays a vital role in helping students make strong academic progress. That’s why we focus on core knowledge—the essential facts, definitions, and concepts that form the foundation of every subject. This carefully selected knowledge is designed to prepare students for success at GCSE and beyond.

Building Long-Term Memory

Research in cognitive science shows that we naturally forget information over time unless we revisit it—a process known as the forgetting curve. To help students retain what they’ve learned, we use regular review strategies such as quizzes and low-stakes testing. These aren’t about pressure—they’re powerful tools that strengthen memory and build confidence.

Simple Strategies, Powerful Results

One of the techniques we use is Look, Cover, Write, Check (LCWC). It’s a simple but highly effective method that encourages active recall—one of the best ways to embed knowledge in long-term memory. By mastering key facts, definitions, and formulas, students are better equipped to engage in deeper learning, solve problems, and think critically in class with the support of expert teachers.
