Year 10 students recently enjoyed a fascinating careers trip to the historic The Mermaid Inn, gaining valuable insight into the wide-ranging opportunities within the hospitality industry.
During their visit, students toured the hotel’s guest rooms, restaurant, bar, and function spaces, learning how each area plays a vital role in the successful day-to-day running of the business. The experience offered a behind-the-scenes look at how a well-established hospitality venue operates while maintaining its unique character and reputation.
Students also explored how businesses in the hospitality sector must continually adapt to changing customer expectations and demographics. A key part of this included learning about the Inn’s partnerships with local organisations such as Plumpton College, which supplies some of the wines served—highlighting the importance of collaboration within the industry.
The Inn’s owner shared valuable advice on employability, emphasising that success goes beyond a strong CV. Students were encouraged to develop essential skills such as teamwork, effective communication, a willingness to learn, and the ability to respond positively to feedback.
Throughout the visit, students represented the school exceptionally well. Staff at the Mermaid Inn praised their engagement, thoughtful questions, and professional conduct, making it a rewarding and memorable experience for all involved.
This inspiring trip provided students with a deeper understanding of the hospitality sector and the diverse career pathways it offers.
