Six Ark Alexandra Academy students recently took on the challenge of their Practice Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award expedition, accompanied by Mr Burchell and Miss Clark, navigating the rugged landscape of Dartmoor in exceptionally demanding conditions.
Dartmoor is renowned for offering "four seasons in one day", with sunshine, wind, rain and mist often testing the resilience of those who venture across its moors. This expedition, however, presented a different challenge altogether, with the group experiencing relentless heat throughout their journey.
Faced with long days, challenging terrain and heavy rucksacks, the students demonstrated remarkable determination, resilience and teamwork. Despite the conditions, they made excellent progress, reaching checkpoints on schedule and maintaining a steady pace across the expedition.
To ensure the wellbeing of all participants, sensible adjustments were made to increase the number of checkpoints, allowing regular access to water and ensuring everyone remained fit and safe throughout the journey.
The students also showcased impressive campcraft skills. Each evening, they successfully prepared and cooked their own meals, with some creative menu choices appearing around the campsite. After long days of walking, the campsite facilities provided a welcome opportunity to rest and recharge before the next day's challenge.
Throughout the expedition, students consistently displayed the qualities that underpin the Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award: perseverance, independence, teamwork and a positive attitude.
The practice expedition has provided invaluable preparation for the students' assessed Gold expedition later this year. Having successfully tackled the challenges of Dartmoor in extreme heat, they will head into October's assessment with confidence and experience, ready to face whatever conditions the moors may have in store.
