On Friday 21st March 47 cadets and junior cadets set off at 4am to travel to France and Belgium to visit some of the Battlefields
This year they visited Lochnager Crater, Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, Beamont-Hammel and then Tynecot in Belgium.
The cadets spent time at each place learning about the magnitude of loss that happened. They also learnt about how names can be removed from the Thiepval Memorial when remains are able to be identified and given a military burial.
They said it was so sad that so many people and never came home, and this was seen at Lochnager Crater where there is an empty chair to symbolise all the homes that had an empty chair at their table where so many people didn’t come home after the war.
As a cadet unit we feel that this trip is important for us to be able to ensure the memories of those who fought and lost their lives for us are carried on and never forgotten. We will remember them.
