Ark Alexandra Academy students took on the challenge of hiking and camping out over the weekend to go towards their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh awards. The students were lucky with the weather and took on the challenge of finding their way around two routes with great enthusiasm. Map reading skills and team work is key, and students soon learnt that some needed a little more practise with their map skills than others.
Even though the teams sometimes took the wrong turns and took a slight detour, they always worked out where they had gone wrong and got back on track. Staff reminded the students that this is all part of the process and working as a team and rechecking their routes is what is needed to find where they have gone wrong and then they can correct it.
They were all happy to have finished the first day and enjoyed cooking out and comparing what each team had bought for dinner. The following morning there was a range of breakfasts being cooked from porridge to bacon and hash browns! All fuelled up and ready to go they put their tents down and packed their rucksacks up and eagerly set off for the second day.
In the afternoon the students were thrilled to finally have Bodiam Castle in their sights as they knew it was nearly the end. They were all warmly welcomed back by family and friends and all said they enjoyed it and are looking forward to signing up to Silver next year.
Thanks to Mr Burchell, Miss Clark, Miss Springett and Miss Whiteman for supporting the students.
