Students at Ark Alexandra Academy were inspired today during a Year 7 assembly led by George Rodrigues from Warming Up the Homeless, the school’s Ignis House charity.
George spoke passionately about the vital work the charity carries out to support people experiencing homelessness across Hastings, Bexhill, and Eastbourne. Students gained a powerful insight into the range of services provided, including breakfast, lunch, and evening meal support in Hastings, as well as outreach work, food collection services, and community partnerships.
Sharing his personal journey, George explained how being furloughed from his role as a chef during lockdown led him to volunteer—an experience that grew into a deep commitment to helping others. His story highlighted the impact individuals can make within their communities.
Warming Up the Homeless is supported by an extraordinary team of over 420 volunteers, including local shops, home cooks, and outreach workers, all working together to provide essential support and care.
The charity also collaborates with organisations such as Seaview Project and Extract, which provides support for young people under 18, demonstrating the importance of partnership in addressing complex social challenges.
The assembly offered students a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the importance of compassion, community, and social responsibility, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.
Volunteer Opportunity: George shared that Warming Up the Homeless are particularly looking for support with local food collections in the evenings and at weekends. Even just an hour can make a real difference
